Do Not Be Afraid and Keep Your Promises: A Review of Eva Gata’s Posthumous Book «Strange Stories» 01.10.2019 Kostiantyn RODYK In the foreword to Eva Gata’s posthumous book “Strange Stories” (Lviv: BaK, 2019), we read: “A book-photograph.” Let that stand, for are not almost all books just that? Let us speak only of its inner, X-ray image, so to speak. Strange stories come to mind in fragments. It is a phenomenon familiar to every writer. A writer’s notebook is the tool used to capture them. Yet the first, nearly finished story surpasses in quality a substantial body of hastily published…

For people, as for oneself: a public self-analysis in prose by the Lviv writer Eva Gata 13.09.2019 Kostiantyn RODYK Writer Eva Gata (left) and Svitlana Pyrkalo: the nominee’s interview with the BBC. (Photo by Kostiantyn RODYK.) In 2010, the "philosophical-mystical novel" (as the press called it) "Three Virtues, or a Tale of Orichalcum" was shortlisted for the BBC Book of the Year award. By that time, it was already the fifth book of the Lviv writer Eva Gata, while the first ("Purification, or I Do What I Want", 2007) had been reissued and translated into Russian and German (in Austria). Its nationwide recognition came primarily from a genre unusual at the time: a remarkably bold combination of a practical, self-help component — let us call it “how to feel happy” — with plot-based reinterpretations of ancient myths. It took the form of a parable, rooted on the one hand in the Biblical…

Eva Gata was born in Lviv. She is currently an associate professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. Her life calling is to teach students and write books. For the past three years, she has been actively collaborating with the University of Athens and the University of Thessaloniki (Greece), writing philosophical-mystical novels that, in her opinion, will make the world a better place. Where does such a pseudonym – Eva Gata – come from? Eva was the first woman, while “gata” is Greek for “cat”. In the book “Purification, or I Do What I Want”, one of the novellas bears the Greek title “Kano o ti thelo”, meaning “I do what I want”. This does not, of course, mean wanting something and then smashing someone’s windows! Do what you ought to do, but remain free rather than simply obeying orders. A cat walks wherever it wants, while a person…
